Right now my mother and father-in-law are in the hospital for Covid, they’re out of the Sacramento area. My sister-in-law out of San Diego is in the hospital for Covid. All three are not vaccinated. I have an employee who has been out sick with Covid young and healthy until now unvaccinated. Right before he got sick I had talk to him about getting the vaccination because our clients are going to require it he said no. Guess what? He wishes he got it now.

I think you’ve hit it on the head, the media, including the main stream media, is reporting this in a biased way. How long did we see them list infections by number and not per capita? California was always at the top of the list because we have the most people, it was obviously a stupid wait report it, even MSNBC was doing it. Is the media stupid or is it doing it on purpose and if they’re doing it on purpose where is this liberal media they’re talking about?

Everybody I know and I hear about today they’re getting really sick are unvaccinated.

I read the newspaper and refuse to watch any news on TV. It's partisan, and it's caused a terrible division in our country. Now the insurrectionists are heading back to the Capitol on 9/18. Let's hope they are not treated as nicely as last time. They need to be locked up and charged with treason. This is serious.

Why the hell is the New York Times pandering and walking on egg shells in order to not offend the anti-vax/mask people in the red states? It's not like those people are going to buy or subscribe to their newspaper anyway. Reminds me of whenever CNN goes out to interview some Trump cult members in a deep red county out in the middle of nowhere at a restaurant. Why bother? They aren't your audience CNN!

Most of my family have made sure they were vaccinated. My BIL has a new girlfriend who is anti-vax and I have told BIL that she is not invited to Thanksgiving, nor is he ever to bring her to my house. I happen to know her and she is one of those people who never listens to her own constant talking-she’s a lot, anyway. I have become inured to people who are anti vax and I have cut off and ceased doing business with several area merchants and such who have foisted a both sides narrative which I find intolerable and willfully ignorant. I have good friends in Texas who are leaving there, finally. One friend laments the lack of Democrats, including Beto, who are not announcing, or attempting to run against Abbott. The power grid disaster and abortion law have been the final straw for my Ph.D friend and his lawyer wife.

I believe the majority of Americans take this pandemic seriously. I understand that the media likes to harp on the negative all the time, but maybe they should take a different approach and start reporting those that live in red states and do take this seriously. Show people that are anti vac that they are the minority. I must confess that when I hear news that some right wing radio idiot dies from COVID, I just shrug my shoulders. 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️

I am heading to the great state of New York in a few days, my birth place, and I am so looking forward to being in a place that is safe. I love Arizona and my life here, but the politics are atrocious. I am safely vaccinated, I have been quarantined and I have several masks 😷

See you soon NYC!

COVID reminds me of HIV in the 1980s. Most Blue states-type people (Wed have to come up with a new moniker that describes a mindset rather than a location - since we are living in parallel worlds now and it is only going to get worse I think)..

Anyway, most blue state people went through HIV at a more personal level than red state people because there were people affected by HIV in gay and color communities..... so blue state people are more aware of precautions and paying attention to your health and the health of others.

Red state people are basically still going to bath houses in 1992 and not using condoms..

Michelangelo the distinction is VERY important as you stated.

People will, unfortunately hear what they want to hear, but if we don't demand that these journalists put the correct information out, we are doomed to more and widening infection rates and a repeat of 2016 or worse.

I fear Pompeo more than Sweet Potato Sadaam, he could be their nominee for President and he is more right wing than any candidates the Rs will put up by far, to the right of Josh Hawley, boy wonder of the right.

These people demanding their "freedom" to infect and carry the virus are simply asking for taking away the rights of those of us who believe in vaccination and masking.

The irony that NYC has the highest vaccination rate compared to the rest of NY state is not lost on those of us living in Western NY.

Thank you for keeping us informed with REAL information, not false claims of bullshit!

I live in Dallas, which is one of the Blue Oases in the Red state of Texas. Municipal leaders and school boards and many voters in the different cities and school districts surrounding Dallas/Ft. Worth and other large metros in Texas are fighting back against Republicans at the state level. The Texas GOP's (Greed Only Priority) absurd COVID-19 policies along with positions and legislation on voter suppression, abortion, upcoming gerrymandering and other atrocious right-wing agenda issues must be stopped, struck-down and reversed. Texas Democrats (and there are many of us) are even more infuriated about what is happening in Texas than those of you in the rest of the country and we are fighting back!

The idiocy of preventing COVID-19 vaccination and mask-wearing mandates at the local level will cost lives in Texas. Sadly, such actions can also cost lives elsewhere in the U.S. and around the world. In order to wipe out this dreadful virus people need to wear masks, maintain social distances, wash their hands, etc. and they must get vaccinated. Our best hope is to reach herd immunity which requires a high enough percentage of people getting vaccinated and getting boosters when indicated. Yes, having different parts of the country doing their part to fight this invisible monster results in much lower rates of infection, hospitalizations and death caused by COVID-19. However, that doesn't solve the nationwide and worldwide pandemic danger.

With travel today being so easy both existing and new variants of COVID-19 can be introduced into a community, heck even an entire country by a few infected travelers spreading the virus to different parts of a state, the country and internationally and then the virus takes hold and spreads locally. The Delta Variant has been far more contagious than earlier versions of COVID-19 and has caused heightened levels of the disease. The longer the virus is able to spread the higher the chances are that a future variant can get around existing vaccines and even develop to where a new vaccine that is currently effective against COVID-19 cannot be developed. Likewise, treatment of future variants of the virus could prove far more difficult.

Each of us must do our part to be vaccinated with the latest versions of the vaccinations recommended and to follow the necessary behavioral efforts to minimize the spread of the virus. We must also do our best to get others to do the same, not just others where we live but throughout the country. I know that interaction with anti-vaccination and anti-mask family members, friends, co-workers, neighbors and others locally and around the country has been frustrating, combative, non-productive and downright infuriating but we cannot give up. Sadly, interactions have all too frequently involved name calling, insults, yelling and rarely have they changed minds and actions.

However, we cannot give-up trying. What we can do is do a better job of preparation and changing the way we approach the unconvinced. We need to continue do our homework on COVID-19 developments, treatments, vaccinations and trends. We must also do our homework as to what techniques work best at convincing the anti-vaccine and anti-mask folks to consider changing their minds and behavior. There is information that covers this available in the media and online. I suggest seeking the information and sharing them with others trying to convince their contacts as well.

One techniques I have been using is to ask anti-mask and anti-vaccine folks who they trust most when they are facing a medical emergency themselves or a loved one is facing. Who and where do they contact for information and advice? Most often they turn to their physician(s). Suggest that rather than you and they arguing back and forth that they contact their physician's office who they trust on other medical issues and get their advice. Their doctors regularly spend time keeping up for the latest medical information and guidance and they keep their office staff up-to-date with the latest information. Their doctors will be far more knowledgeable than you are, than they are, and far more knowledgeable than biased political leaders and others, who have an axe to grind, are. I suggest contacting physicians' offices is that doctors don't have lots of time available to speak with all their patients with COVID questions.

If there are public figures that you know they have a great deal of respect for who are strong public advocates of mask wearing and vaccinations you might want to let them know. The main objective isn't for you to change the minds and actions of anti-maskers and anti-vaxxers, which you are highly unlikely to be able to do. However, if you are able to get some of them to get in contact with experts they trust who will be much more likely to convince them why it is critical for them and the entire country to get vaccinated, wear masks and do everything possible to fight COVID-19.
