I have cried for the loss of a hero and for the fears I have for the loss of equality. As a mom,it’s been heartbreaking to talk to my gay son and offer assurances he will continue to have all the rights all humans should be afforded ,when we have a monster in office. But now I need to turn my fear into action and start donating to senators outside of my home state of California and also start making calls. Time to turn the sadness into fierce action for LGBTQ people, women, People of Color, migrants seeking asylum , the climate and for all of humanity for decades to come. He simply can NOT appointment another justice. We cannot let our sadness derail us now. Time to mobilize and get motivated even more! Our lives and future lives depend on it.

I alternate between being grief stricken and being determined to fight Trump and his Trumplicans to the bitter end. One promising note: as of an hour ago, $8 million was donated to flip the senate, a $5 million increase in a couple of hours. Justice Ginsburg's death shook us all up and fired us with a renewed sense of urgency. I don't think Nancy Pelosi would shut down the government because that would just cause more suffering when people already are suffering, but tying up Trump in a new impeachment inquiry is a brilliant move to keep him from ramming someone through, because our election is on the line. Isn't he the one who couldn't fight covid because of the January impeachment? We need to push back hard and lean on those 4 Senators who are good candidates for bucking McConnell.

I think we all know that Pelosi will never shut down the government over this, and given her extreme reluctance to impeach Trump the first time, there is no possibility that she will do so now. Murkowski and Romney have stated that they would not support the confirmation of a new justice pre-election. I doubt that there are 2 additional Senators willing to risk the loss of their conservative base 2 months before an election, so it's highly likely that McConnell will push through Barrett's confirmation. Even if McConnell believes that a better political play would be to wait until the election is over, Trump would never allow this to happen. So, the Democrats are going to have to win big in the Senate. The best thing anyone can do is to donate to Crooked Media's fund to flip the Senate--they've raised $2M+ in the house since Justice Ginsburg's death. https://secure.actblue.com/donate/getmitch

Some things I'd like to add: I don't think this helps Republicans or Trump in the election and the entire thing is fraught for them. Trump needs suburban women and others who right now are opposed to him to vote for him. And though we maybe have seen some fraying of the evangelicals on the edge, they were likely going to come back. This solidifies it but that's not nearly enough. It would be nice for Biden to have those who strayed because of concerns about coronavirus but he doesn't need them.

This nomination shifts Trump's main argument in the campaign from "law and order" to "I want to take your uterus." If one wasn't really working on suburban women even though he and others thought it might, the other is dead on arrival. This only works for Biden and Democrats, bringing in younger women and others who might not have been thinking of voting.

The pandemic and the response, meanwhile, will not recede from the news for long and is the number one issue voters care about. We've passed 200,000 dead. Republicans are admitting that losing the presidency and the Senate is worth it to put a right-wing justice on the court. https://news.yahoo.com/why-and-how-republicans-will-push-through-trumps-supreme-court-nominee-184752773.html

So even they know it's likely to lose them the presidency and the Senate. If they do it, which looks like the case, Dems must commit to getting rid of the filibuster and expanding the court to 15 justices if the take the presidency and the Senate, and expand the appeals courts too. They should educate Americans about this now. Nothing radical about it -- court has been larger and smaller at other times in history. And if GOP going to do this we must respond.

Thank you Micheal, I needed this directional shot of hope this am. I feel so sad on so many levels this was a good thing to read first thing. I am holding Pelosi and Schumer accountable to play hard ball NOW - full stop- or please get out of the way. We have to do what it takes to preserve justice & RBG’s legacy from this most criminal cruel administration & compliment GOP in American history.

RIP Justice Ginsberg

We’ll take it from here

I think that we should once again impeach Trump. Mitch McConnell and Trump and Barr have/are single handedly destroying our democracy. I am a 66 year old white woman that grew up in an all white city in Michigan. I remember when I couldn't get a credit card in my name. I had to have my husband as a cosigner. We were denied apartment because I was the only one working at the time. I couldn't get birth control pills unless I was married. The only jobs available to woman were, teaching, nursing and secretary jobs. I DO NOT WANT TO GO BACK TO THOSE TIMES.... All the progress we have made on equal rights for LBGTQ, marriage equality etc. Black Lives Matter.....I would like anyone out there: Can you give a an instance where a White Cop has shot an unarmed white male in his grasps 7 times in the back? How about a white officer shooting and killing an 12 year old white boy playing in a park with a toy gun from his patrol car? How about a white officer pulling over a white male for not having a front license plate on his girlfriend's car and being shot a killed while still in the car? Racism still exists..... These GOP senators are deplorable people. Hillary had it right!!! We have 2 supreme court justices that have sexually assaulted women. We have a president that has sexually assaulted many women. Where are you GOP senators???? We need to vote them out. The Lincoln project needs to run ads on Mitch McConnell. The election can't come fast enough.. I am voting by mail and will get that in as soon as I get my ballot. I have encouraged all 4 of my kids to vote early.... We must take back our country from the white supremacy

The Court must be expanded to a MINIMUM of 13 seats to make up for the 2 stolen seats.

Mitch McConnell was wrong when he refused to give Merrick Garland a hearing which was an abrogation of his constitutional duty. He would be wrong to refuse to give whatever troll Trump puts forth. I have little doubt that this will take place after the election in a cynical attempt to fool the truly naive into thinking Republicans have the least bit of probity. I'm guessing that if Trump loses they will still push through his pick. If the Senate flips, they'll push through this pick. If Trump wins they'll push through this pick. It's the way they govern and if Democrats haven't learned this by now they are irretrievably stupid.

As much as I'm sorry for our county's loss of a judicial icon , I can't help but think of the saying "Democrats fall in love. Republicans fall in line." Clinton lost because there were too many Liberals who didn't want to vote for her because she wasn't Liberal enough, too militaristic, had too much baggage, insulted Bernie supporters, etc. They sat out or voted third party and we're stuck with tRump and his enablers in government now.

REMEMBER THIS! None of us are perfect. There are no perfect candidates. We're not going to agree with everything. If there's a candidate that you can find common ground for at least 80% of what you want, then that's enough. Biggest questions are is the person intelligent, compassionate, willing to listen and compromise.

Now, we have to fight and preserve our great nation's institutions, because the Right appears not to care. Let's get out there!!

A very sad day for America and for democracy in general. To replace a towering woman of amazing strength and compassion with yet another right wing hack is almost unthinkable, but Moscow Mitch owes is toadies and he will try and deliver. There are procedural moves that the Dems in the Senate can make to slow it down, but who knows what will happen in the end. It would be great if McGrath could defeat him in KY, but the money Putin is giving him is a potent reminder of who really runs this country now. We must fight harder than ever to make the Blue Tsunami a reality in November! We must all be strong for RBG and the example she has set!

Brilliant piece Michaelangelo, in fact this is literally the only take/analysis I've paid attention to since she died. I can't take the freak out and pile-on coming from social media and other media outlets. Everybody needs to calm the hell down, consider all options, think strategically, and most importantly VOTE. There ARE things we and the dems in power can do, we just have to stay focused and DO them. We can't be running around with our hair on fire.

Do what RBG has done....FIGHT.....for her memory alone. I have written many letters to the principal hypocrites who have the power in their hands at this juncture. We have,to en masse, apply “We The People” pressure. We saw the crowd that turned up at the Supreme Court last night, we can do it, let’s energize and fight against the power of McConnell/Trump etc., force a delay in their Supreme Court nomination. It is what RBG would expect of us.

I agree with Attorney Daniel Goldman. My greatest fear is that Trump will overturn the election with the help of William Barr and the new Supreme Court.

Hmmmmm, this is very concerning and I am heartbroken over her death. Such a strong and dedicated soul who knew her stuff and fought the good fight to overcome her illnesses. Just wish the repubs had strong constitutions to fight the good fight in showiing decency and respect for the "ordinary" people who make/made their rich arrogant lives happen. Dig deep dems and make good trouble to defeat any repub nomination. Hoping for sustainable strategies, but, I keep remembering what the heartless grim-reaper moscow mitch did to Obama's potential nominee for the Supreme Court and the mean streak reubs have.
