I had no symptoms when i was diagnosed with ovarian cancer as the pandemic began. It wasn't caught early because there is NO early detection system. So i will just add--along with best wishes to you always, and gratitude for your openness-- that women need to be aware that reproductive cancers are deadly and we must demand more from our "healthcare" system than what is now available.

I'm on year six after a similar diagnosis at the age of 48, due to an elevated PSA followed by a biopsy. Good luck on your journey.

This is a message I've been sharing with people for years, and I also always tell them that cancer--caught early--is very survivable, and it's the highest form of activism for a queer or trans person to simply keep LIVING to fight another day. But, as you know, as one of my early role models in LGBTQ media (OutWeek changed my entire career trajectory), this does hurt my heart. So please take care.

Thank you for sharing such a personal, yet powerful testimony. I’ve been telling friends and family for years that they must take control of their own healthcare, advocate for themselves, and educate themselves about everything that affects their particular demographic. Not every doctor is cut from the same cloth or understand the differences in healthcare needs among their patients, especially when sexuality, race and ethnicity are a factor. I actually have my annual physical next week and will be requesting a PSA from my doc. I will also recheck my list of tests that I typically request during my physical.

Please take care of yourself and again thank you for sharing your story. I’m so happy to hear that your great prognosis!

Michael Angelo: Great that you have your results! My Dad had it. As a result, his Urologist wanted me to start PSA tests at 40; this is 10 years prior to normal at 50 due to the history. So, early detection is key! Listening to you talk about it on the show too now. Maybe Interview a Urologist on the show too?

Mike, I am happy - not that you got a diagnosis but that you got such an *early* diagnosis. My husband also had no symptoms. The only thing in retrospect that I noted, and I hope this is not too graphic, was a decrease in seminal fluid (to put it politely) and interestingly, uncharacteristically bad breath. Other than that, we would have had no idea that he had any difficulty with his prostate had it t been for his PSA results. His cancer was more advanced than yours and his urologist said that if he had waited another year, he would be dead. The cancer was located right next to the bladder wall and could have spread if he had delayed any longer. He has been cancer free for about 10 years. My husband is a real advocate for early detection and says if your insurance company won’t pay for the damned blood test, scrape, beg, borrow or steal the money to get it done yourself if you have to. He, too, had some bumps in the road with insurance but it all worked out. I’m glad you have such a supportive spouse and family and please know that your listeners care about you as well.

Hello Michelangelo. My husband and i love your show and have become part of your progressive extended family as we enjoy our roadtrips across this great country. You have already inspired us in so many ways (I actually quote you; I hope that’s okay!) and this recent email just reveals another incredible facet of your intelligence and compassion for everyone! So glad that you are where you are in your positive diagnosis and so grateful that you are spreading the word about early detection! Sadly, this is not always available to each one of us which is a problem I hope we can eventually correct together! Be well, my friend, and keep up the amazing work…we need you and your articulate voice! Hugs! Corinne

I am sorry to hear your diagnosis. Early detection saves lives. It saved mine. Diagnosed in 2015. Locally advanced. Prostate surgery and radiation treatments in 2016. PSA has been undetectable ever since. Onward and upward

I join with all your fans and listeners in wishing you well. You were so smart about this entire episode. Thank you for posting your personal story and maybe helping others who have reticence about getting tested. It’s better to know when you can be in a position with choices, than too far gone to recover.

My husband had a doctor who said "Eh, you're going to be 50 next year, let's add a PSA to your tests. He was diagnosed and treated within 6 months. His Gleason was 5. That was 16 years ago and his PSA continues to come in at less than zero. Glad yours was caught early, and that you're taking this opportunity to raise awareness. Good on you.

Thank you for sharing this important message. My husband went through this, after radiation he's fine. But it was a struggle to get him follow up and emotionally deal with the diagnosis. We were very lucky. Hugs and loving energy to you and your husband.

Yeah that initial diagnosis is a bitch, isn't it? You're obviously in great shape and I suspect you'll get through this well. Just listen to your doctors and keep in doing life. Hugs and much love, Becky
