New York State Senator speaks out after being pepper-sprayed, handcuffed and arrested at a protest, as police brutality surged on the 10th night of demonstrations. New York State Senator Zellnor Myrie protested this week at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. His experience, which he shared with me, is vitally important to listen to as we have witnessed 10 nights of protest across the country and as Thursday night saw a wave of violence by police in cities and localities all over America — much of it caught on camera.
If a policeman feels free to knock an elderly man to the ground, see that he was injured and STILL proceed to walk away, that says it all. It’s disgusting. There are good police, as in the officer who helped me when I discovered my father had passed away in his house 5 years ago. But the bad ones need to be rooted out and removed. If I, an African-American, can be fired from my job of 4 years after speaking up about racism in the company, then how is a person who took an oath to serve and protect be given a pass for deliberate harm and killing of persons without just cause?
I'm glad their are people finally standing up. Who the hell knows how much the police have gotten away with over the years when nothing was caught on camera.
